    23 May 2022 10.15-13.30 Workshop Room 2 - Ground Floor Session

Building optical fibre networks is hard. It costs a lot of money, it takes a lot of time, and it causes a lot of disruption. Or at least that’s always been the case.

But things have changed.  Today, miniaturized optical infrastructure and innovative construction methods can reduce capex, accelerate time to market and lower the overall footprint of an installation.

In this workshop you will learn about:
    •    Construction methods that require less labour and lower cost
    •    Conduit systems that ensure dig-free, permit-free future upgrades
    •    Blown fibre approaches that offer longer, faster cable installs
    •    Optical cable technologies that deliver unprecedented fibre density

Italy’s Broadband Deployment Status - network delivery challenges, processes implementation and choices made to deliver a gold standard network at scale.

    23 May 2022 10.15-13.30 Workshop Room 9 - 1st Floor Session

In this workshop, we take a unique view into Italy’s developing nationwide Ultrabroadband (UBB) full fiber program. We will explore PON infrastructure and design criteria to suit local environment and conditions.

The workshop will discuss the process, operations, and field deployment challenges across network creation phases and how operators such as Open Fiber in Italy are using solutions, systems and automation to ensure a high-quality fault-free network during build and installs.

We will also outline how systemising the approach across lifecycles are also helping deliver lower-cost operation and maintenance of the in-life network. Optimising operations can be especially difficult in a neutral wholesale model environment that serves multiple ISPs Internet Service Providers). This Italy case study will take a pragmatic look at the decision criteria, processes, and approaches implemented across the passives and active infrastructure and how systems are helping automate and create a gold standard network.

Upgrading the FTTH network - key considerations

    23 May 2022 14.30-17.45 Workshop Room 5 - Ground Floor Session

The past decade has seen huge investment in FTTH networks throughout the world and Europe is no exception with more than 200 million homes in Europe now able to access FTTH services. In addition, the demands placed on these networks are constantly changing and increasing. As a result, network operators must regularly question if their networks are still fit for purpose to deliver what customers want and if they are still competitive. One of the key questions that must be explored is whether the network needs to be upgraded in any way in order to deliver enhanced performance. Any decision to upgrade will require additional capital investment and so cannot be taken lightly.
This workshop will explore the questions around upgrading FTTH networks in detail and will include speakers from network operators who are faced with these questions today. Some of the key issues to be explored will be:

    •    When is an upgrade required?
    •    What are the options and what are their benefits/downsides?
    •    How future-proof will the upgrade be?
    •    Passive layer upgrade options

Accelerate your fiber built with quality - a hands on workshop

    23 May 2022 14.30-17.45 Workshop Room 3 - Ground Floor Session

One might think that the acceleration of FTTH fiber rollout would be accompanied by lower network quality due to the shortage of labour and skilled workers. However, these two components are not mutually exclusive and can work hand in hand. The key to success is automation and doing things right the first time with the correct tools.
This workshop will give you practical hands-on experience to make your ongoing FTTH rollout a success. We will cover the full FTTH network construction, though focus on the Last mile and in-house cabling, since here most problems occur.
You will receive valuable applicable knowledge on how to blow and install a fiber without delays in a high-quality way. You will first-hand do splices and learn how to best handle fibers. Finally, you will validate and qualify your work with different measurement tools and get insights into the different automation approaches, which will further speed up your deployment.

This workshop is both aimed at Operators as well as Contractors, who want to build an FTTH network as fast and efficient as possible, while maintaining a high-quality network and getting ahead of the competition.

Deploying fibre in historical towns: technical experiences and regulatory implications

    23 May 2022 14.30-17.45 Workshop Room 7 - 1st Floor Session

This workshop will discuss policy and technical issues concerning the deployment of fiber in complex environments, such as historical towns, starting from a case study of the Isiline FTTH network in the Piedmont region of Italy. Isiline has built a network that reaches more than 100,000 units in 50 municipalities. The network has been built in towns and villages that feature some very old streets and buildings. Starting from the experience gained by Isiline in the Piedmont region, the workshop will, inter alia, discuss how to overcame the challenges presented by historical streets and buildings and how it can be possible to leverage existing infrastructures, such as for instance the “district heating” right of way to build a state-of-the-art FTTH network. The workshop will focus on all aspects of such projects from initial concept and high level design through to construction and day-to-day operations.  Regulatory and competition implications, also with respect to state aids, will be also examined.

    Speakers:

    • Ivan Botta, CEO, Isiline
    • Innocenzo Genna, Genna Cabinet Sprl
    • Adrian Amezcua, Prysmian
    • Rik Missault, Fiberklaar

Would OpenRAN pave the way for new x-haul operator?

    23 May 2022 14.30-17.45 Workshop Room 10 - 1st Floor Session

Fibre is definitely the preferred solution for 5G base stations connection. With the development of OpenRAN, the segmentation Fronthaul / Midhaul / Backhaul becomes always more relevant.

Investments in fibre networks will be so important that commercial operators might be willing to transfer part of their CAPEX investment into OPEX.

Until now TowerCo were only interested in the management of sites and were not involved in the network vision. Today, some enlarge their scope and become with the backhauling management. Furthermore, fibre infrastructure wholesalers expect a lot from the opportunity to address the mobile market.

Panel 19 - The business of the in-home network: More flexibility or keep it simple?

    25 May 2022 13:45-15:00 Conference Room 4 Session

The days when broadband connectivity was just a simple modem or router handing over the connection from Communication Service Provider to consumer are long past us. Most consumer equipment now supports Wi-Fi, and end-user requirements on the experience are higher than ever. But Wi-Fi doesn't 'deliver' everywhere and Cat-5e and better cabling is not always available, so other options are also still needed.

How are CSPs dealing with this increase of complexity? Do they use the flexibility or do they keep it simple? Are they actively assisting the end-user, or is that a can of worms better left closed? And what do we have to look forward to in future?
